VALET SERVICE FOR OUR KIDS?
You bet!!
Each year we ask parents to provide valet service for our children’s safety in front of PS 98. I have participated in this activity (4 times per month) for the past two years and have come to realize that this is an absolute necessity.
We need volunteers to help out between 8:10 AM and 8:25 AM to encourage parents to move their cars as quickly as possible after drop off to ensure the safety of our children.
While on duty, you simply:
1. encourage the cars to move up into the available space in front of the school
2. open the door to let the child(ren) out of the vehicle,
3. greet them, and
4. send the parents on their way.
A simple, “Have a great day,” aimed at the children and parents goes a long way. Send the parents on their way knowing that their children are safely in the school building. If this is something you can do, please turn the paper over and fill out the form.
Between 8:10 AM and 8:25 AM, the street in front of our school is a very busy thoroughfare for commuters rushing (in cars, bicycles and by foot) to catch their train, drivers making illegal u-turns, parents getting out of their cars to let kids off (sometimes using the driver side doors), school buses, and delivery trucks. It’s not a pretty picture!
This is probably the easiest volunteer job you could help out with. It can be done on your way to work (if you’re a commuter), when you drop off your own children at PS 98 (if you don’t have others to drop off at other destinations), or before you go back home to tend to whatever you need to do for the day. Fill out the form on the back of this sheet to help out as a valet volunteer.
Commit to as much as you can. I used to do those 4 days when it was convenient for me; I just let the person in charge know a year in advance. Let me know what days you are available for the school year. Four days per month amounts to one hour of volunteer time per month. Certainly 9 hours for the entire year for the safety and well-being of our children is worth the time.
If only 20 or 25 parents, grandparents or guardians volunteer, we could have every day of the year covered.
In the space on the reverse side, please let me know what dates or series of days you will be able to take your place as valet from 8:10 until 8:25, give or take a few minutes on either side of that time frame.

Please fill out the accompanying form and send back to your child’s teacher or to me as soon as possible.
On the reverse side of this letter is a chart with all the days that school is in session. Simply check off the dates that you could help out. Keep a copy for yourself, and assume that you are “on” for those days unless you hear from me otherwise.
You may return this to me in any of several ways:
Send in with your child in his/her folder;
E-‐mail to me at njrestivo@aol.com;
Fax to me at 718-‐631-‐8960.
I look forward to working with you to keep our children safe!
Nick
