Dear PS 98 Families,
As you are all aware our beautiful school is nestled in a little corner of Douglaston right by the Long Island Railroad. This makes morning drop offs and afternoon pick-ups sometimes challenging and occasionally frustrating for both our families and those that live in the neighborhood.
Our school’s location and school start time rubs up against morning commuters aiming to catch the 7:57 am and the 8:10 am train to Penn Station. Many of these commuters do not have children attending the school and as their priority is catching the train, there is often disregard for the laws requiring stopping for the school bus or stopping for children at both the Douglaston Parkway crosswalk and in front of the school.
Part of the problem is that the area around the school is NOT demarked as a school zone. The Doug-Bay Manor Civic Association has been petitioning and meeting with Councilman Vallone and other elected officials in hopes of getting speed zones and speed bumps in the neighborhood. When the association discussed this with the SLT Committee a few months back, they indicated Councilman Vallone needs to see that there is support of this measure by the school community as well.
Below please find a link to the online petition. Please sign the petition so that we can show our voice as concerned parents for our children’s safety!
Thank you for your continued support!
