PS 98 eligible for $115,000 “free community money” – YOUR VOTE REQUIRED

We believe that a healthy neighborhood school benefits the larger community. A neighborhood school is an anchor of a community, as important as our places of worship and recreation. PS 98 is our local community school, and its health is threatened by chronic underfunding. There’s plenty to fix, including the school art room and a very necessary upgrade to the technology classroom computers. The good news is we have a community that cares and has for years provided funds and other resources to ensure its success.

But there’s better news.

PS 98 is eligible to receive $115,000 in “free community money” to pay for these improvements. These improvements will benefit not only the current students, but those who follow in the years to come. However, the money is not guaranteed; competition for the funds is fierce. It will only happen if we all vote for these proposals and encourage our neighbors to come out to do the same. We need you to vote for these proposals.

Here’s how it works.

This year, residents of eight (8) NYC Council Districts are given the right to decide how to spend some public monies through a process called Participatory Budgeting. Our Council Member Dan Halloran, District 19 is one of the eight that has set aside $1 million dollars of public funds for our community to vote and allocate accordingly.

Community delegates discuss local needs and develop proposals to meet these needs. There is an Expo that you can attend (see the attached flyer) to showcase these proposals. Then, by public vote, district residents (that’s you) decide which proposals to fund.

VOTING
Voting for us takes place at two (2) conveniently-located establishments/dates listed below.  If you can not make these dates/times, attached find additional District 19 dates/locations to visit to vote.

Wednesday, April 3, 2013

Friday, April 5, 2013
Community Board 11 - VOTING TIMES:  10AM-3PM
46-21 Little Neck Parkway
Little Neck, NY  11362

Eligible voters must be 16 years or older and live in District 19 (neighborhoods include Auburndale, Bayside, Bay Terrace, Beechhurst, College Point, Douglaston, Flushing, Little Neck, North Flushing, Whitestone)

And that’s how PS 98 gets “free community money” for the Art Room Renovation ($65,000) and Wi-Fi Classroom upgrades ($50,000).

Think of it this way. If PS 98 gets the proposed total ($115,000), it would be like making a donation of just over $500 for each child who attends the school today. If these proposals are voted through, the community would have effectively donated the entire amount without having to contribute the money personally.

Your vote is really that important.

Eighteen (18) proposals were identified (see attached). Of these, five (5) have an educational focus. Two (2) proposals on the ballot specifically benefit PS 98. Together, these two comprise just over 10% of the budget, leaving more than 85% of the budget available for other community use. That seems fair.

Not all proposals will be funded. There isn’t enough money. The proposals will be ranked from most popular to least. Then funds will be allocated starting with the most popular, and will work its way down until the pot is exhausted. There are proposals priced over $350,000 and we’re competing with large communities like Bayside, Whitestone, and College Point. So it is therefore important that we get as many votes in for these projects to ensure they rank high on the popularity score.

So, mark your calendars, grab your neighbors and get out to vote on Wednesday, April 3rd and Friday, April 5th at the convenient locations listed above.  There’s $115,000 of “free community money” at stake that will benefit PS 98, your neighborhood school!

PTA Children’s Programming Update

Dear PS98 Parents,

The goal of Children’s Programming is to present engaging, interactive Residency and/or Assembly programs to the students through out the school year.

Yesterday we hosted Wildlife Encounters: Australian Animals.
Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, www.omahazoo.com
The children learned about Australia and its many interesting residents and their habitats.
They saw 7 animals: emperor scorpion, bearded dragon, blue tongued skink, sugar glider, snake neck turtle, carpet python and a baby red kangaroo named Toughie.  It was quite a sight to witness Toughie hopping up and down the aisles of the auditorium much to the amazement and joy of our children.

Last week we hosted Midori & Friends: Voices of Inspiration.
www.midoriandfriends.org,
Voices of Inspiration are a premier international vocal group based in New York City.

The workshops and concert deepened the children’s understanding of Black History Month through the context of music.  It metaphorically relates to Mr. Adams’ theme  of “The Stories In Music” and helped the children feel the spirit of the Civil Rights Movement, as well as aspects of this American experience in song.

In the month of November, 2012 we hosted the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers.
www.thunderbirdamericanindiandancers.wordpress.com
Thunderbirds are the oldest Native American Dance company founded in 1963.
Their goals are to preserve and perpetuate the cultures of the American Indian people through songs, dances and traditional dress.  The children were wowed by the spectacular dance of the hoops and all the extravagant ceremonial “costumes”.  They related to us that we are ALL native americans.

Darren Sardelli, the Funniest Poet in School (www.laughalotpoetry.com) visited us in October, 2012 based upon a recommendation from one of our great PS98 teachers.
Darren Sardelli is an ward winning poet and children’s book author whose goal is to inspire children to start writing poetry.  He is influenced by Dr, Seuss and believes in writing down your ideas every day.  He brings poetry to life by performing his funny poems to the audience which demonstrates how dynamic writing can be.  The children interactively created impromptu poems with Mr. Sardelli though the use of rhyming techniques and showed them how make a poem surprising, humorous and exciting.  He was the perfect guest for the Douglaston School of Literature!

Children’s Programming would like to thank you for your generous Membership Appeal contributions which pays for these programs.  We appreciate your continuous support.

Sincerely,
Children’s Programming

Science Lab- Maritime Explorium

Dear PS98 Parents,

Science Lab with the Maritime Explorium (Hofstra Univ.), funded by the PS98 PTA is a resounding success.  This program would not be available to our children without your generous Membership Appeal contributions.
Thank you for your support!

Lab 1 (Color without Crayons)- Chemistry
sessions finished on 1/17, 1/28
The children explored the fascinating world of indicators. Cabbage juice was used to demonstrate dramatic color changes in the presence of acids or bases.

Lab 2 (Clean Up Time)- Chemistry
sessions finished on 2/4, 2/7
This lesson invited the children to explore the chemistry of substances through the challenge of creating unique and safe cleansing products to make tarnished pennies sparkle again.

Lab 3 (Squeaky Clean Water)- Engineering
on 2/25, 3/7
The children will be asked to construct, experiment, control and gauge variables, compute distance, determine particle size and sequence a series of activities in order to get clean water.

*Please note that the children design their own experiments and keep track of their findings through drawings, sketches, writing, graphing and/or discussions.

The PS98 PTA would like to thank you for volunteering to help in these lab sessions.  Please arrive 10 minutes early and plan to stay 10 minutes after the lab is over in order to insure a proper transition.

Thank you for all you do.
